Lake Manyara National Park packs an unusual amount of variety into a small footprint: a soda lake that draws thousands of flamingos, a dense groundwater forest more reminiscent of a rainforest than a savannah, and one genuine oddity — lions that climb trees.

Overview

Set at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park covers around 330 square kilometres, roughly a third of which is the lake itself. The park’s compact size means you move through several distinct habitats in a single game drive — groundwater forest, acacia woodland, open grassland, and the lake’s shoreline — each with its own character and wildlife.

Highlights & Wildlife

Manyara’s tree-climbing lions are the park’s signature draw — a local behavioural quirk not fully explained by biologists, best spotted lounging in the branches of acacia trees during the heat of the day. The lake itself, when water levels are right, attracts large flocks of flamingo alongside pelican and stork, while the surrounding forest holds troops of blue monkey and baboon, plus healthy elephant and buffalo populations.

Quick Fact

Over 400 bird species have been recorded at Lake Manyara, making it one of the richest birding destinations on Tanzania’s northern circuit.

Few parks in Tanzania change character as quickly as Manyara — forest to grassland to lakeshore, often within the same hour of driving.
