Overview
Covering around 2,850 square kilometres south of Lake Manyara, Tarangire takes its name from the river that runs through it — the park’s lifeline during the dry season, when it becomes one of the most reliable water sources for miles around. The landscape is distinctive: rolling grassland punctuated by ancient baobabs, some estimated to be well over a thousand years old.
Highlights & Wildlife
Tarangire holds one of Tanzania’s largest elephant populations, with herds of 200 or more not uncommon during the dry season. The park is also home to species less commonly seen elsewhere, including fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk, plus healthy numbers of lion, leopard, and an impressive population of breeding birds — over 550 species have been recorded here.
During the dry season, Tarangire can host one of the highest concentrations of elephants of any park in Africa, as herds converge on the river from the surrounding dispersal areas.
Tarangire trades crowds for character — ancient baobabs, river-bound elephant herds, and the quiet feeling of having a landscape mostly to yourself.
Things to Do
Tarangire is home to some of Tanzania’s largest elephant herds and its skyline is dotted with ancient baobab trees, some estimated to be over 500 years old.
