Set at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park covers around 330 square kilometres, roughly a third of which is the lake itself. Manyara’s tree-climbing lions are the park’s signature draw — a local behavioural quirk not fully explained by biologists, best spotted lounging in the branches of acacia trees during the heat of the day. The lake itself, when water levels are right, attracts large flocks of flamingo alongside pelican and stork, while the surrounding forest holds troops of blue monkey and baboon, plus healthy elephant and buffalo populations.
Over 400 bird species have been recorded at Lake Manyara, making it one of the richest birding destinations on Tanzania’s northern circuit.
