On This Page

Lake Natron is a shallow soda lake in northern Tanzania’s Rift Valley, famous for its striking red and orange colours caused by salt-loving microorganisms, and for sitting at the foot of Oldoinyo Lengai — the Maasai’s sacred “Mountain of God” and the only volcano on Earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. Together, the lake and volcano form one of Tanzania’s most dramatic and least-visited landscapes.

Overview

Lake Natron’s high alkalinity and mineral content give it a red hue in the dry season, and the lake is the only regular breeding site in East Africa for lesser flamingos, who nest safely on its salt crust islands, out of reach of most predators. The surrounding landscape is stark and volcanic, dominated by views of Oldoinyo Lengai rising sharply from the Rift Valley floor.

Fun Fact

Lake Natron’s water can reach temperatures of up to 60°C and a pH as high as 10.5 — alkaline enough that dead animals in the lake sometimes become calcified, preserved in the mineral-rich water.

Getting There

Most visits start from Engare Sero village on the shores of Lake Natron, roughly a 4–5 hour drive from Arusha. The Oldoinyo Lengai climb typically begins at night from a base camp near the mountain’s foot, so the village is usually reached the afternoon before.
