The Ngorongoro Crater is the centrepiece of the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a roughly 8,300 square kilometre protected landscape where wildlife and Maasai pastoralist communities share the land — a rare model of conservation and human coexistence. The crater floor itself, at around 610 square kilometres, holds permanent water, grassland, and forest, which is why animals rarely need to leave it.
