Plan My SafariOr email usTanzania’s fourth-largest national park, Mikumi covers roughly 3,230 square kilometres of grassland, acacia savannah, and miombo woodland along the Mkata River valley. It’s part of the larger Selous-Mikumi ecosystem, and its flat, open plains make wildlife easy to spot from the road — a big reason it’s known locally as “the Serengeti of the South.”
Mikumi is known for large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, and giraffe grazing the open Mkata floodplain, along with healthy lion prides and one of Tanzania’s most reliable spots for sighting the shy, striking greater kudu and eland. Elephants move through in sizeable family groups, and hippo pods are easy to find along the river.
Mikumi is roughly a 3.5-hour drive from Dar es Salaam on a fully paved road, making it Tanzania’s easiest park to combine with a short beach or business trip.
Mikumi has the wide-open, Serengeti-style game viewing without the days of travel to reach it — perfect when time is tight.
Mikumi is often called the “Serengeti of the South” for its strikingly similar open plains, easily reached in a few hours from Dar es Salaam.

Most visitors drive from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar (via ferry then road) in about 3.5–4 hours along the paved A7 highway, often as the first stop on a southern-circuit safari toward Udzungwa or Ruaha. Scheduled light-aircraft flights also connect Mikumi’s airstrip with Dar es Salaam and other southern parks for those short on time.
One to two nights is enough for a satisfying visit, since the park’s open plains make game viewing quick and reliable.
