Indian Ocean · Unguja & Pemba Islands · Beaches, Spice & Stone Town

After days of dust and early-morning game drives, Zanzibar is where a Tanzania safari usually ends — white sand, warm turquoise water, and a slower pace entirely. But the island is more than a beach add-on: Stone Town’s winding alleys, centuries of Swahili and spice-trade history, and genuinely excellent diving give it a character all its own.

Overview

Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, made up of the main island of Unguja — usually what people mean when they say “Zanzibar” — and the quieter, more rural Pemba Island to the north. Long a hub of the Swahili coast’s trade in spices, ivory, and textiles, the islands carry a rich mix of African, Arab, Persian, and Indian influence, most visible in Stone Town’s architecture and cuisine.

Highlights

Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rewards a day or two of unhurried wandering through its markets, mosques, and carved wooden doors. The east coast beaches — Paje, Jambiani, Nungwi — offer the classic postcard scenery, with reef systems just offshore good enough for excellent snorkelling and diving. Inland, spice farm tours walk you through the cloves, vanilla, and cinnamon that once made the islands famous worldwide.

Quick Fact

Zanzibar was once the world’s leading producer of cloves, and spice farms across the island still grow the same crops that built its historic trade economy.

Zanzibar is the reset button after a safari — the pace slows the moment you step off the plane onto warm coral sand.
