Plan My SafariOr email usCovering around 392 square kilometres in southern Kenya, Amboseli National Park sits directly across the border from Mount Kilimanjaro, giving it some of the most photographed safari backdrops in the world. Its seasonal swamps, fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro itself, keep the park green and attract wildlife even in the dry season.
Amboseli is best known for its large, well-studied elephant families, some of which include bulls with exceptionally long tusks. The swamps draw buffalo, hippo, and abundant birdlife, while the surrounding dry plains support giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest, with lion and cheetah also present. On a clear morning, Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peak frames nearly every sighting.
Amboseli’s swamps are fed by underground rivers originating from Kilimanjaro’s melting snow and ice, which is why the park stays green even during the driest months.
Amboseli is one of the few places where you can photograph an elephant herd and Africa’s highest mountain in the very same frame.
Amboseli is home to some of Africa’s last remaining “big tuskers” — elephants with tusks so large they nearly touch the ground.
| Season | What You’ll See | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Jun – Oct | Dry season, animals gather at the swamps | Peak game viewing, clearest Kilimanjaro views |
| Jan – Feb | Short dry spell, good visibility | Good value, clear mornings |
| Nov – Dec | Short rains | Green scenery, fewer visitors |
| Mar – May | Long rains | Lowest rates, lush landscapes |
Most visitors fly into Nairobi and connect via a short scheduled flight (around 45 minutes) to Amboseli’s airstrip, or drive from Nairobi in roughly 3.5–4 hours. Amboseli is also within reach of Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport for those combining it with a Tanzania safari.
One to two nights is enough, since the park is compact and game viewing is quick and reliable.
The mountain is often clearest early in the morning; cloud cover can obscure it later in the day, especially during the rainy seasons.
Yes — its proximity to Kilimanjaro International Airport makes it a natural add-on to a northern Tanzania itinerary.
